Acropolis

Not just a must-visit site in Greece, but a must-visit site for all Earthlings. A place richly filled with geopolitical, architectural and religious history. Located in the heart of Athens, the Acropolis hill is undeniably the most important site of the city. Built in the 5th century BC, the Acropolis is, without a doubt, a vestige of the past that every Greek is proud of.

Meteora

Perched on the peaks of towering sandstone pillars formed millions of years ago stand the monasteries of Meteora, most of which were constructed during the Middle Ages. The Greek word meteorameans “suspended in the air,” and this phrase aptly describes these remarkable Greek Orthodox monasteries. As one of the most spectacular sights in Greece, the Meteora monasteries not only offer incredible views of the surrounding landscape but a unique perspective of medieval monastic life as well.Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, Meteora is a magical place in Greece.Six of the original complexes are still inhabited by clergy who welcome visitors from all over the globe. The picturesque town of Kalabaka situated at the foot of the peaks serves as a comfortable base camp for treks to the top.

Olympia

Home to the first ancient Olympic Games, held every four years to honor Zeus, Olympia features among the most important archaeological sites in Greece. In the western Peloponnese, this magnificent site welcomes visitors from across the whole world and plunges them into a distant past, where they can learn all about the Olympic Games, through the exploration of the site, which includes the ancient stadium, the gymnasium, the temples of Zeus and Hera, as well as the workshop of ancient Greece sculptor Phidias. A visit to Olympia is not complete without a stop at the nearby Archaeological Museum were many of its impressive artefacts are on display.

Delphi

Set at the foot of Mount Parnassos, the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, home to the most famous oracle of ancient Greece peacefully waits for visitors. Considered the center of the world in ancient times, Delphi was the cultural and religious hub of the Hellenic civilization.Thought to be the center of the earth, Delphi, located at the foot of Mount Parnassus is undeniably one of Greece’s most interesting archaeological sites in Greece. Home to the most important Delphi oracle in the ancient world, Delphi welcomed pilgrims from all over the Mediterranean Basin who came to inquire of god Apollo through the prophecies of the Pythia, the high priestess of his temple.

Zagorohoria

Tucked somewhere in the Pindus Mountains in Epirus, northwest Greece, the isolated region of Zagori is home to a cluster of over 40 stone villages, known as Zagorohoria. Surrounded with breathtaking and scenic landscapes, these villages are perfect for hiking. Very close by, visitors will find the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world. The other attractions in the region include paragliding, mountain biking and rafting.

Mystras

A fortified town located on Mount Taygetos in the Peloponnese, Mystras (or Mistras) is located near the town of Sparti. It was a powerful city in the last decades of the Byzantine era, and now consists of an old town surrounded by walls and an imposing palace at the top of the hill. Known today for its beautiful Byzantine churches with striking frescoes, Mystrasis now silently surrounded by splendid nature. Visitors can stop by the modern village of Mystras, which features traditional architecture and picturesque little squares.

Corinth

The modern town of Corinth lies seven kilometers northeast of the ancient city and only an hour’s drive west of Athens, to which it is connected by a regular bus service. The town is also famous for the Corinth Canal, which gives ships a route through the isthmus of Corinth.Located on the isthmus which connects mainland Greece with the Peloponnese, surrounded by fertile plains and blessed with natural springs, Corinth was an important city in Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman times. Its geographical location, role as a centre of trade, naval fleet, participation in various Greek wars, and status as a major Roman colony meant the city was, for over a millennium, rarely out of the limelight in the ancient world.

Nafplio

Less than two hours from Athens, Nafplio is a city often dubbed the most romantic of Greece. Nestled on a bay on the northeastern coast of the Peloponnese, the former capital of the modern Greek state boasts narrow streets, a waterfront promenade and beautiful neoclassical mansions. With little tavernas serving tasty food, little cafés and little hidden gems, the city of Nafplio is a beautiful destination for a quick getaway from Athens.Set on a bay on the eastern coast of the region, it was the first capital of the modern Greek State in 1828, until Athens took over in 1834. As such, the city has preserved its alluring charm and is filled with neoclassical villas. Overlooked by the Palamidi Fortress, dating from the 18th century, it is very close to major sights such as Ancient Corinth, Epidaurus or Tyrins.

Cape Sounio (Temple of Poseidon)

At the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, 70 kilometers away from Athens, the Cape Sounio is known to be the place where Athenian king Aegeus jumped into the sea to his death when he thought his son Theseus was killed by the Minotaur, giving his name to the sea. But Cape Sounio is more than just a place of legend. It is home to the Temple of Poseidon. While the first version was destoyed by the Persians in 480 BC, the second version, of which a few columns still stand today, was built in 440 BC.

Epidaurus

In the region of Argolis, in Peloponnese, Epidaurusis known around the world for its ancient theater. Built in the late 4th century BC, the theater of Epidaurus served to host religious ceremonies in honor of god Asclepius, whose healing center was located nearby. Famous for its incredible acoustics, this classical theater is still used today. Indeed, every summer it hosts performances of ancient Greek drama.
